April little things

I feel like April was a month of growth. Leaves appeared on the trees, flowers bloomed, and the grass grew tall.

 Like, really tall.

We ended up with 8 bags of grass clippings when all was said and done.

There's something so wonderful about freshly cut grass!

Kylie planted some grass seeds for a school project.  They fared quite well too.

The world wasn't the only thing that suddenly came to life.  I feel like in many ways the kids did too.

Kylie is still head-over-heels in love with Paris.  Her notebooks are full of drawings just like this.

Summer comes alive when she does gymnastics.  It seems to be her "thing."  It's been fun to watch her progress so much in a short amount of time.

She is also preparing for kindergarten!  We recently attended Kindergarten Roundup, a night where the soon-to-be kindergarteners tour the school and meet the teachers.  Summer's favorite part of the evening was when she got to go on a bus ride around the parking lot.  She was thrilled to find out that a few of her friends from church will be going to the same school as her in the fall.

Jackson's hair was getting a little out of control so I gave him a haircut.  It's quite the process.  As long as he is strapped in his high chair with one of his favorite TV shows on, he does pretty well.  But he IS a two-year-old, so the quicker I can complete the haircut, the better.

As I snip away, I drop his hair clippings in a bowl to avoid making a mess on the carpet.  This is what it looked like by the time I was done:

Don't worry, he still has plenty left :) The only down side about his haircuts is that he seems to instantly transform from a baby to a little boy.  He looks so old!

The warm weather brought lots of fun times outside.  Josh and the kids helped our neighbors lay down some mulch.  Summer took it very seriously.

The girls attended a fun birthday party.  Everyone had a great time playing "field day" type games.  Kylie won the egg race and Summer won the sack race.

We tried to spend as much time as possible outdoors because here, in April, you just never know what the weather will be like from day to day.

For instance, I received this text message Thursday afternoon.  Fortunately, there were no tornadoes in our area and the kids weren't delayed for too long.

Other fun things from this month:

I've been working hard to stick to my goals so I rewarded myself with these fabulous shoes.

One of my goals is to exercise more regularly.  As a mom, I get plenty of exercise just from doing my regular daily activities: pushing a shopping cart full of groceries and kids, chasing a two-year-old, cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning... but there's something so great about a WORKOUT.  I recently discovered group fitness and it has completely changed my outlook on exercise.  In addition to running once a week with friends from church, I've also started circuit training {with many of the same friends} and a hip hop class at the YMCA.  These workouts beat a lonely jog on the treadmill any day!!

Josh took Kylie on a date to The Flying Cupcake.

She had some fun with mismatch day during spirit week.

Summer's preschool class took a bus ride around town as a field trip.  She loved it, of course.  As well as her shirt, apparently :)

I've started to be more diligent about limiting screen time, especially for Jackson who is home all day everyday.  There has been a lot more of this, which I love.

I found these pictures on my phone.

I read the book Me Before You in a matter of days.  It was a super sad book {notice the pile of tissues...} but also very lovely.  I like books that make me think about the beautiful things in life.

This is what family scripture reading looks like more often than not.

My washing machine is... not my favorite.  It is constantly "unlevel," which means that the following two things happen: 1) the washer shakes violently, sounding like a herd of horses are running through my kitchen, and 2) it abruptly stops.  It's common for me to start a load and have to rearrange the soaking wet clothes several times throughout each cycle.  I guess I'm grateful that I have a washing machine, but I would love to have one that works properly someday, especially when I'm doing 6+ loads of laundry each week!

During one of Summer's gymnastics classes, Jackson got to experiment with a trial class with another boy his age.  I'm not going to sign him up for anything in the near future because we need to work with him on following directions.  He listened to the instructor for maybe 10 minutes and then he went off and did his own thing.  If anything, it was incredibly amusing to watch!

He was supposed to slide down on his bottom...

Josh's sister, Amber, delivered a healthy baby boy on Tuesday.  Welcome to the family, Aden!  We are thrilled to have another nephew.

I forgot to mention back in January that we gained another nephew.  Kayo is so sweet and we couldn't be happier for Prince and Rachael.

The girls had fun trying on some of my summery accessories.

I had lunch with an old friend at Chick-Fil-A.  Jackson wore himself out!

Jackson now prefers to crawl into his crib by himself.  Fortunately, he doesn't try to crawl out, but his sister is always happy to help.  Doesn't that look so comfortable?

Josh and I went on a much needed date last night.  We ate at this great hole-in-the-wall BBQ place and then went for a motorcycle ride.

The washing machine isn't the only thing struggling around here.  Our dishwasher decided to quit, which means lots and lots of handwashed dishes.  I'm pretty sure our home warranty will cover most of the expenses... I hope.

Bedtime is always an interesting time.  Now that it's staying lighter longer, the kids aren't always ready to sleep when we would like them to.  Thank goodness they have a dad who doesn't mind wearing them out!

That was April in a nutshell.  I just can't believe that by this time next month school will be out!
